Well, seeing how my last post was so ridiculously negative, I'll make this one a bit nicer.
And shorter, sort of.
This is the speech given by Howard Roark in The Fountainhead at his trial, and it is one of my favorite pieces of writing ever.
Rather than express how it made me feel, and my views on it I'd rather let others take their own outlook on it.
If anyone reads my blog, comment :]

hi this is emmmmaaaaa from church. you know me, right?
i just have to say: i don't think it's true, for example, that "no creator was motivated by a desire to serve others." if that were true, thomas edison would have patented the lightbulb forever and charged huge profits for himself, and america would be the only nation with electric light. people naturally give and take and feel and try to be more selfless, less selfless, medium selfless, whatever. there aren't extremes with this kind of thing in reality. we're pack animals. it's how our brains work, therefore it's inseperable from our conception of morality and from our feeling of how everyday life ought to be. it might seem cooler to be
COMPLETELY INDEPENDENT!
but that's not what it means to be human. you'd maybe be the alpha pack animal if you were
COMPLETELY INDEPENDENT!
but you might also be the lonely-ass dog with his tail between his legs in the middle of a siberian forest growing some mange and unable to find enough food.
& we are parasites. it's inexorable and undeniable. the formation of a new life takes place as an infestation in the genitalia of another member of the species. we suck nutrients out of her and then once she has expelled us we spend at least a decade dependent on her or on substitutes. then, even before we reach maturity/puberty, one of our most powerful impulses is to replicate the experience, except this time around we want to have the nutrients sucked out of us... or even if we don't want that, we want to experience the pleasurable impulses associated with the creation of our baby parasite (masturbation, anyone? & the clitoris is pretty darn impressive - the only organ on humans that is solely for the purpose of pleasure!).
it is a sanitization and a miscalculation to say that it's possible or desirable for a human being to be a "creator," not a "parasite." that's like saying we should all try our hardest not to ever eat, drink, shit, pee, have sex, or look other people in the eye.
basically what i'm trying to say is that we are such parasites, we're all used to it, it's how we work. that's why we're nice to each other.
hi, alicia.
oh man. the reason i wrote this was that i was dawdling with the internet while procrastinating on my college essays. i have to Write A Critical Analysis Of A Non-School-Assigned Text. i guess i should critique the fountainhead. cuz i apparently have a LOT to say about it. thanks alicia! and sorry i split my comments into four pieces. i always think of something right after i hit send. this time i will try not to. lololololol
